CHAPMAN — The Abilene High School junior varsity football team traveled to Chapman Monday afternoon for an intra-county showdown and the Cowboys came home with a 28-14 victory.

Heath Hernandez got the Cowboys started with a 21-yard reception from Andy Wilson to set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Wilson on the following play and Justin Linn tacked on the PAT for a 7-0 Abilene lead.

The Cowboys next touchdown was set up by a Chapman fumble and Daniel de la Cruz caught a 15-yard pass from Bryce Meuli, Linn tacked on the PAT for a 14-0 Abilene lead.

The Cowboys tacked on one more touchdown just before half when Cody Markley caught a short pass from Wilson and took it 49 yards to the Chapman 1, which set up a 1-yard plunge by Wilson, Linn tacked on the PAT for a 21-0 Abilene lead at intermission.

Abilene got on the board again just shortly after intermission when Meuli took a quarterback keeper 41 yards to the Chapman 1. On the ensuing play Meuli again ran a quarterback keeper and scored the touchdown for the 28-0 lead.

Chapman scored its two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“I was really proud how the guys competed tonight,” Abilene coach Brad Hartman said. “We did a lot of good things in all three phases of the game.”
