For the fourth time, the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene has been nominated for the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Medium Sized Rodeo of the Year.

The event shares the category with rodeos in Phillipsburg, Kan., Deadwood, S.D., Lufkin, Texas, and Ogden, Utah. The winner will be announced at the PRCA’s annual banquet held in Las Vegas during the annual national convention on December 1.

The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo was nominated in 1995, 2001, and 2002, before being nominated this year. They have never won the award.

The medium-sized designation is based on purse size of $3,000-$9,999 per event. There are 107 medium-sized rodeos in the PRCA. The award is voted on by the entire PRCA membership.

In addition to the event’s nomination, the rodeo’s announcer is also up for an award. Mike Mathis will vie for Announcer of the Year, and several comedy acts and clown acts who have performed in Abilene are also nominated, including Robbie Hodges, Mark Swingler, Keith Isley, Tommy Lucia, and John Payne.
