SALINA — The Abilene High School freshman volleyball team traveled to Salina Saturday for a tournament and put together a 4-1 record.
The Cowgirls opened the tournament with their only loss of the season, thus far, as they fell 25-17, 25-17 to McPherson. Kristi Wilson went 10-10 serving while Courtney Geist was 8-8 serving with 11 assists, Nichole Taylor was 5-5 serving with 1 kill and Allie Walters was 3-3 serving with 6 kills against McPherson for Abilene.
The Cowgirls then ripped off four wins in a row as they beat Smoky Valley 25-9, 25-10, Salina Central 25-16, 25-17, Hays 25-14, 25-16 and Salina South 25-11, 25-18 to capture third place in the tournament.
Against Smoky Valley, Taylor Thompson was 16-17 serving with two kills, Geist was 8-9 serving with 2 kills and 10 assists, Walters was 6-7 serving with three kills, Hailey Devine was 5-5 serving with three kills and Taylor was 3-4 serving with four kills and one assist.
Against Salina Central, Geist was 10-11 serving wtih four kills and 11 assists, Walters was 8-8 serving with seven kills, Taylor was 7-10 serving with two kills and Wilson was 5-7 serving.
Against Hays, Geist was 12-13 serving with one kill and eight assists, Thompson was 10-12 serving with two kills and four assists, Walters was 5-5 serving with three kills and one assist.
In the consolation final against Salina South, Wilson was 13-15 serving with 2 kills, Geist was 10-11 serving with one kill and 15 assists, Thompson was 6-7 serving with four kills and four assists, Devine was 5-6 serving with three kills, Taylor was 5-6 serving with three kills and one assist and Walters was 2-4 serving with 10 kills.
The Cowgirl freshman are now 6-1 on the season.
AMS 7th graders top CMS 7th grade 40-22
CHAPMAN — Last Thursday the Abilene and Chapman 7th grade Middle School football teams opened up their seasons against each other with the Longhorns emerging with a 40-22 victory.
Abilene scored four rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown. Hayden Funston took care of the Longhorn rushing touchdowns while Rogan Tokach caught the pass from quarterback Ryan LaCombe. The point after poinst were spread out over three Abilene players as LaCombe, Any Tope and Funston each scored PATs.
The Leprechauns points came from Dashawn Brooks and Brett Lemon.
Brooks took care of the four rushing touchdowns for Chapman and two of the PATs while Lemon scored Chapman’s other PAT.
