CONCORDIA—The Abilene Cowboys placed second and the Chapman Irish a surprising third in the North Central Kansas League golf tournament Monday.

Justin Linn led Abilene with a fifth place overall finish shooting 78. Jacob Harms tied for sixth medalist with a 79. Nick Rice shot 86, Monte Sexton 86, Casey Sexton 87 and Thomas Cooper 90.

“Overall, it was a decent day,” said Abilene coach Mark Willey. “I wish we could have put some pressure on Concordia but we only had two good front nine scores. Concordia is a good team and they deserved to win.”

Led by Lex Deal, who was medalist with a 70, Concordia won the league title with a score of 301. Abilene shot 329 and Chapman 344. Wamego was fourth with a 360 followed by Clay Center 362 and Marysville 379.

“Justin Linn had his best round as a Cowboy,” Willey said. “It is always special to play your best at the league tournament, he came home with the fifth place medal.

“Jacob Harms tied for sixth and was in a three-way playoff for the last medal. He left an eight foot birdie putt on the edge on the first hole and then bogeyed the second to finish seventh. “He played pretty solid all day, he is hitting the ball very well,” he added.

“I was really proud of the two seniors (Monte and Nick), the never gave up. They could have thrown in the towel after the front nine, but both came back and played great on the back nine.”

Brandon Cook led Chapman with an 82, 10th place overall. Josh Chewning shot 85, Bryce Winters 87, Kody Baer 90 and Dustin Cody 98. Tyler Cody was disqualified.

“Bryce Winters and Kody Baer shot their best round of the year,” said Chapman coach Brett Koster.

“Concordia also will host the Regional on Monday, they will be tough but we have a chance,” Willey said. “We will have to have four good scores.”
