Tennis team second in JC tournament

JUNCTION CITY—The Abilene tennis team faced another formidable line-up at the Junction City Invitational Saturday.

The Cowboys came away with second place scoring 13 points. Lawrence Free State won the event with 16 points. Manhattan and Topeka High both had 12 points. Junction City scored four and Salina South three.

Matthew Barlow placed second for Abilene at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Jordan Guccione and Tommy Yeager placed fourth. Kaynan Anderson placed third at No. 2 singles and Connor Dunlap and Connor Kijowski placed second at No. 2 doubles.

“I was very pleased with a second place finish for our team at a tournament like this,” said Abilene coach Garry Stredney. “We had some tough competition which we really needed.

“Matthew continues to compete well against 5A and 6A state qualifiers,” he added. “He had a tough loss to the Lawrence Free State player, but bounced back with big wins over the Junction City player and the Topeka player.

“Our No. 2 doubles team ended up with a 4-1 record on the day and some nice wins over Lawrence Free State and Topeka.”

At No. 1 singles, Barlow won over Zach DeLoach, Manhattan, 8-1; lost to Andrew Craig, Lawrence, 8-5; won over Frank Davis, Junction City, 8-2; won over Collin Connor, Topeka, 8-4; won over Lucas Renz, Salina, 8-2.

At No. 1 doubles, Guccione and Yeager lost to Kenton Hallowell/Jake Seaton, Manhattan, 8-4; lost to Richard Lu/Phillip Bradshaw, Lawrence, 8-7 (7-5 tiebreaker); won over Alex Felts/Gary Davis, Junction City, 8-7 (7-4); lost to Thomas/Lowry, Topeka, 8-1; won over Grant Flemming/Gage Kerns, Salina, 8-7 (7-3).

At No. 1 singles, Anderson won over Taylor Knapp, Manhattan, 8-1; lost to Nick Pellett, Lawrence, 8-3; won over Max Stuckey, Junction City, 8-1; lost to David Wang, Topeka, 8-1; won over Kevin Kraus, Salina, 8-4.

At No. 2 doubles, Dunlap and Kijowski won over Ethan Pauls/Spencer McFall, Manhattan, 8-3; lost to Brandon Juracek/Josh Saathoff, Lawrence, 8-5; won over Josh Brandmahl/Sean Skinner, Junction City, 8-3; won over Davis/Kenefate, Topeka, 8-4; won over Phil Mahoney/Phil Nguyen, South, 8-0.

The Cowboy’s next varsity tournament is the North Central Kansas League Tournament at Marysville on Saturday.
