Dickinson County communities recognized for tree efforts

Abilene was recognized during the March 24 Kansas Forest Service recognition for Tree City Communities and Tree Line USA in Topeka.

Abilene has been recognized as an Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA community for 19 years. Abilene has spent $14,285 in the last year, planting 28 trees, pruning 20 trees and removing 37 trees.

Chapman has been a Tree City community for three years, with expenditures of $12,000 in the past year with 11 trees planted, 105 trees pruned and four trees removed.

Herington has been a Tree City community for 22 years. They spent $15,000 on storm damage last year, spending $149,085 total, with 21 trees planted, 227 trees pruned and 45 trees removed.

The Abilene Tree Board offers information about tree selection, planting, pruning and maintenance for property owners. The board meets bimonthly. For more information, call 263-7266.
