BELOIT — It might not have been in the stars for the Beloit Relays Friday night for by the time the Abilene track team reached home the stars were signing brightly, that despite the event starting at 10 a.m.

“We had somewhere in the neighborhood of an hour and a half delay due to weather,” said Abilene coach Jeff Geist “Our team sat in the high school band room while others packed in under the stadium seating.”

The threat of a severe weather and tornado watch was just half the delay.

“They also were learning a new computer system/timing device was an extremely slow through the prelims,” he said. “I believe the prelims took 2-1/2 hours.”

The Cowboys and Cowgirls stood in the rain most of the morning.

“You could say that it was a tough day on all the athletes but they all seem to handle the situation very well,” he added.

Following the rain, the teams were given 30 minutes to warm up before the meet started again.

Also, in addition to the Class 4-3 A event, a Class 1-2 A meet was held at the same time making it the largest meet attended by Abilene this year.

Kelsey Lacy won both the hurdle events for the Cowgirls. Her time in the 100-meter hurdles was 15.31, her fastest time this season. Teammate Krista Bacon also placed third in both events.

Abilene’s 4x800 relay team of Joe Wilson, Matt Allen, Bryan Leith and Brenden Barnes showed they could run with the best placing second. Sacred Heart won in one of the fastest time in the state 8:26.86. Abilene placed second in 8:40.16.

Wilson also added points running second in the 800-meter run, 2:06.69. Marcus Gonzales placed third in the high jump clearing 5-8 for Abilene.

Due to the weather the Chapman and Solomon teams pulled out.

The Cowboys travel to Russell on Friday.
